For more than 20 years, individuals, families, organizations and workplaces have participated in this special day to expand opportunities and transform the lives of millions of girls and boys both nationally and internationally. Thank you for your interest in the 2014 FIU Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Thursday, May 15th. To participate in this year’s program, guidelines have been established for the safety of our children during their visit to our university. Please remember that a registration form must be completed by all parents, and returned to DHR, PC 224, no later than May 8th, 2014. To access the registration form, please click here.
In addition to sharing your role and career at the university with your child, you will also have the opportunity to select from a variety of optional activities to enhance your child’s experience during their campus visit. Each activity will require a complimentary admission ticket. Due to maximum space capacity, admission tickets will be limited for each session, and tickets will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis by order of RSVP.
Event Participation Guidelines:

My child/children are within the age range of 8 to 18 years old;

I will ensure there are no disruptions to operations, services or to other faculty/staff members;

Minors are prohibited from visiting in hazardous areas (e.g. where hazardous equipment, human derived materials, radioactive materials, and other potentially harmful items are located); such prohibited areas include workshops, laboratories, storages, plant rooms, etc.; and
-
I will ensure supervision of my child/children at all times.

Admission tickets are required for all activities and will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to each parent as they drop off their Parent Registration Form. Please do not bring your form to Human Resources until the Ticket distribution dates which are Wednesday, May 7th and Thursday, May 8th from 10:00AM-4:00PM at PC 224.

To bring your child/children to work, FIU faculty and staff must complete the Parent Registration Form even if you are not attending any of the optional activities. Please hand deliver the form when on the ticket distribution dates listed above and no later than Thursday, May 8th at 4:00PM to the Division of Human Resources located at PC 224.

Discovery Lab- Telebot Demonstration
Innovation across multiple disciplines has made the FIU Discovery Lab, the leading Robotics-Innovation Research
Lab of South Florida. The Discovery Labs bring together researchers and students to a unique environment in which
they can thrive, innovate and make a social impact through interdisciplinary collaborations. During this event, we will
demonstrate our robots including the Discovery Lab's 6-foot Telepresence Patrol Robot, Hutch. Check out a video

Planting a Bulb for the Future
Hosted by The Biology Department
Students visiting the Biology Department’s Greenhouse will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty! They’ll pot up a bulb to take home and grow on a windowsill or a patio.
FIU University Police Department Tour
During this behind the scenes tour of the FIU Police Department officers will explain the career of a police officer, talk about the different/specialized units of the department and how they operate, you get to see a police car and other equipment up-close and discuss the training and qualifications necessary to become a police officer.
Lehman Center for Transportation Research (LCTR Driving Simulation Lab)
Sharing a commitment to advancing research and application of driver safety, FIU's Colleges of Engineering and Computing (COEC) and Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) and the Division of Research have collaborated to develop a premier center dedicated to driver safety, human factors, and related civil engineering projects, the only one of its kind in South Florida. The driving simulator used by the Lehman Center is the STISIM Drive Model 400 with Car Conversion Kit is a high-fidelity driving simulator that interfaced with an actual automobile provides a realistic setting for innovative transportation-related research. The interactive driving simulator has a 135-degree driver field-of-view and it is integrated with an active steering and pedal system. The driving simulator provides opportunities for more sophisticated transportation research to improve the safety and mobility of travelers.
FIU Nature Preserve – Plant a Seed, Grow a Future
Hosted by Office of Sustainability
Students visiting the Nature Preserve will experience the sights and sounds of the Florida Everglades,
without leaving campus! See rare endangered species catch a glimpse of the native wildlife, and watch
for all the golden panthers! Students will be able to plant their own tree seed, either to be taken home or
left to grow at the FIU Nature Preserve.
FIU Youth Sports Program & Demonstration
Hosted by FIU's Continuing and Professional Education
Kids get a chance to dribble, point, and shoot some hoops at FIU's Recreational Basketball Courts! FIU's Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) unit is pleased to announce that it is offering year-round youth sports academies in Basketball, Flag Football, Tennis and Soccer. Join FIU Youth Basketball coaches and players for a competitive scrimmage game!
STAR Center- The Nursing Simulation Lab
The Simulation Teaching and Research Center at FIU, helps train students and other health care professionals using the latest technology and learning methods. High-Fidelity Human patient simulators (not dummies!) play the role of the patient in a highly immersive environment meant to resemble the actual clinical setting (hospital, private practice, and even an athletic playing field!)
To better acquaint our children with higher education, the admission process, and/or career paths, two different age-appropriate orientations will be conducted as follows:
Career Paths
Hosted by Upward Bound / Pre-College Programs, Recommended ages 8-13
Interactive presentation on professional career paths and the corresponding requirements. Career awareness and description of college access concepts.
College Readiness Workshop
Hosted by Office of Admissions (Recommended ages 14 – 18)
Learn about the process of applying to college and the essential tests, forms and information a middle school and high school student should know if considering college. Information about the PSAT, SAT, ACT, college visitations, financial aid, and most importantly course planning. The session will provide a brief overview of the types of colleges and what to consider when choosing a college.
FIU School of Music Prepatory Program
